Ryazan and its people were the first in Russia to officially implement the world art project Inside Out in the framework of the lecture hall and the festival of urbanism «School»

For the project, 140 portraits of Ryazan citizens. Huge portraits completely covered one of the most ruined pavilions of the «Torgovy`j gorodok» , turning it into a monumental art installation.

The idea of the art project is in tune with the title theme of «Schools»  this year:"Ryazan is not only buildings and roads. People are the city — they can change it as they can change themselves." Participants of the action all over the world paste over facades, squares and interiors portraits of citizens to remind each other about it.

Any initiative groups anywhere in the world can participate in an open art project. At the moment, the project has been implemented in more than 142 countries, and in Russia it was not officially organized before, Ryazan was the first. About the inside out project

On March 2, 2011, JR won the TED prize at the TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and called for the creation of a global participatory art project with the potential to change the world. This project is called INSIDE OUT.

Inspired by JR’s large‐format street «pastings», INSIDE OUT gives everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art. Each INSIDE OUT group action around the world is documented, archived and exhibited online.

The INSIDE OUT project has traveled from Ecuador to Nepal, from Mexico to Palestine, inspiring group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, gender-based violence, climate change...
